What the coffee shop is actually showing us. And the thirty second practice that changes everything

We have never been more connected. And we have never felt more alone. Here is what is actually happening...and what to do about it.

What the coffee shop is actually showing us...and the thirty second practice that changes everything

We have never been more connected. And we have never felt more alone. Here is what is actually happening...and what to do about it.

You have probably noticed it.

You walk into a coffee shop and scan the room...and almost nobody is there. Not really. Bodies are present. Eyes are down. Thumbs are moving. The couple across from you have not spoken in ten minutes. The mother beside you is scrolling while her child pulls at her sleeve.

You notice it because you feel it. The absence of something. A kind of collective holding of breath that nobody is talking about.

We are more reachable than we have ever been. And lonelier than we have ever been. Both things are true at the same time.

It is not what you think

Here is what I want to offer...and it is not a lecture about phones.

The phone is not the problem. The scrolling is not laziness or rudeness or a generation that has lost the ability to connect.

It is a distraction. And distraction is what the body reaches for when feeling feels like too much.

When we pick up the phone mid-conversation, mid-meal, mid-moment...we are not choosing the screen. We are choosing away from something. Away from the feeling that was beginning to surface. Away from the body that was asking to be noticed. Away from the person across from us who might see something we are not ready to be seen.

The phone removes us from all of it. From the feeling. From the body. From genuine connection with another person. And it does it instantly, reliably and without judgment.

So the body learns to reach for it. Not as a choice exactly. As a protection.

The question worth sitting with is not why am I on my phone so much.

It is what am I moving away from when I pick it up?

What I see in the room

After ten years of working with people at this level... I can tell you that the disconnection you notice in the coffee shop is the same disconnection that shows up in sessions.

People arrive composed. Carefully put together. The version of themselves they have learned is safe to show.

And then something shifts. The body starts to speak. And slowly the real person...the one underneath the performance...begins to surface.

What I witness in those moments is not brokenness. It is exhaustion. The exhaustion of years of managing the gap between who you actually are and who you have learned to be.

The phone is just the most efficient modern tool for maintaining that gap.

The most powerful moments in this work are never dramatic. They are quiet.

Someone sits in the circle and does not reach for their phone once. Someone messages me a week after a session to say they were in a coffee shop and they were actually there... feet on the floor, breath in the body, genuinely present in a way that felt foreign and then suddenly felt like home.

That is the body remembering what it feels like to be safe enough to arrive.

And once it remembers... it wants to keep feeling that way.

The thirty second practice — try this now

Next time you notice yourself reaching for the phone... not out of need but out of habit, out of discomfort, out of the quiet urge to fill a space that just started to feel a little too real... try this instead.

Put the phone face down.

Place one hand on your chest. Feel the warmth of your own palm.

Take one breath. All the way down. Slow exhale.

And ask yourself quietly...what was I feeling just before I reached for it?

You do not need to fix the feeling. You do not need to analyse it or understand it or do anything with it at all. Just notice it. Name it if you can. Even one word.

Anxious. Restless. Lonely. Bored. Sad. Disconnected.

That single moment of turning toward instead of away...that is where everything begins to shift. Not in a dramatic way. In the quiet, cumulative way that real change actually happens.

The body does not need much. It needs you to show up for it. Even for thirty seconds. Even in a coffee shop.

What the coffee shop is really showing us

It is showing us how many people are living at a distance from themselves. Moving through the world in a kind of managed absence. Present enough to function. Absent enough to stay protected.

That distance has a beginning. A moment, or a series of moments, where turning inward felt riskier than turning away. Where staying in your head felt safer than dropping into your body.

And it has an end.

If something in this landed for you...that recognition matters. It is the part of you that already knows something needs to change.

The door is open when you are ready. 🌿

If you would like to explore this work...sessions are available one-to-one in person in Woonona and online worldwide. The Held circle gathers monthly for those who want to do this work in community.
