Living in Alignment with Your Cycle: A Return to Inner Wisdom
The Four Phases & How to Support Yourself
What if your cycle wasn’t something to manage or push through, but a blueprint for how to thrive?
Living in alignment with your menstrual cycle means recognising that your energy, emotions, creativity, and needs ebb and flow throughout the month. Your body is always communicating — through cravings, moods, fatigue, or inspiration. When we learn to listen, honour, and act in alignment, life becomes smoother, clearer, and more connected.
Your cycle is also emotional and energetic. Each month gives us an opportunity to process, release, and integrate experiences. When emotions are acknowledged and worked through, our cycle can feel more balanced. When they are suppressed, they often surface later as irritability, overwhelm, or emotional sensitivity.
Rather than seeing these shifts as obstacles, they can become powerful signals guiding us back to alignment.
The Four Phases & How to Support Yourself
Menstrual Phase — The Healer (Full Moon) | Inner Winter | Days 1–6 approx.
Energy: Lowest
Focus: Rest, reflection, release
This is your sacred pause. Your body is shedding and resetting, and hormones are at their lowest. Naturally, your energy turns inward. In moon wisdom traditions, this phase aligns with the Full Moon in the Red Moon Cycle, when intuition and emotional awareness are heightened.
Emotionally, this phase often brings clarity. With the busyness of the previous weeks behind you, it becomes easier to hear your inner voice.
Support Yourself With:
- Gentle movement: restorative Pilates, yin yoga, short walks
- Journaling or meditation to process emotions
- Quiet personal reflection
Best For:
- Guided meditation sessions
- Gentle bodywork or nurturing touch
Foods:
- Warm, nourishing meals: soups, stews, leafy greens, lentils, beetroot
- Healthy fats: avocado, olive oil
- Herbal teas: raspberry leaf, chamomile, ginger
Essential Oil: Clary Sage — supports emotional release and hormonal balance
Reflective Questions:
- What emotions or experiences am I ready to release this month?
- How can I honour my need for rest and reflection today?
Affirmation: “I honour my need for rest. In stillness, my body restores and my wisdom speaks.”
Follicular Phase — The Visionary (Waning Moon) | Inner Spring | Days 7–13 approx.
Energy: Rising
Focus: Creation, planning, possibility
As estrogen begins to rise, energy gradually returns. You may feel lighter, more optimistic, and mentally clear. Emotionally, curiosity and motivation increase. If emotions from the previous cycle were processed, this stage can feel inspiring and full of possibility.
Support Yourself With:
- Energising movement: Pilates or gentle cardio
- Journaling, breathwork, or intention-setting
- Starting new projects or habits
Best For:
- Pilates classes to reawaken strength
- Kinesiology sessions focused on clarity or direction
Foods:
- Fresh, vibrant foods: leafy greens, seasonal vegetables
- Light proteins: eggs, fish, tofu, legumes
- Probiotic foods: yoghurt, kimchi, miso
- Hydrating fruits: berries, citrus
Essential Oil: Geranium — supports emotional balance and creativity
Reflective Questions:
- What new ideas or intentions feel exciting and aligned for me right now?
- How can I gently increase my energy and creativity this week?
Affirmation: “I welcome new possibilities. My energy is rising and I move forward with clarity.”
Ovulation Phase — The Creator (New Moon) | Inner Summer | Days 14–17 approx.
Energy: Peak
Focus: Expression, connection, visibility
This is the outward-facing phase of the cycle. Your confidence, communication, and social energy are at their peak. Emotionally, connection and collaboration flow more easily.
Support Yourself With:
- Dynamic movement: cardio, dance, or energetic Pilates
- Creative expression and sharing ideas
- Social connection and collaboration
Best For:
- Group Pilates or movement classes
- Workshops, community events
- Lighter energy healing sessions focused on expression
Foods:
- Cooling, hydrating foods: cucumber, watermelon, berries
- Fibre-rich vegetables: broccoli, kale
- Zinc-rich foods: pumpkin seeds, seafood
Essential Oil: Wild Orange — uplifting, energising, supports joy and confidence
Reflective Questions:
- Where can I express myself authentically and share my energy with others?
- How can I connect with my community or collaborate in a way that feels nourishing?
Affirmation: “I express myself with confidence. My voice, presence, and energy are powerful.
Luteal Phase — The Priestess (Waxing Moon) | Inner Autumn | Days 18–28 approx.
Energy: Gradually declining
Focus: Completion, boundaries, emotional awareness
This phase invites inward focus and discernment. Sensitivity increases, and emotions often surface — especially if they weren’t fully processed earlier. The luteal phase is perfect for grounding, reflection, and setting boundaries.
Support Yourself With:
- Gentle strength-based or restorative Pilates
- Journaling, meditation, or reflective practices
- Kinesiology sessions or bodywork to release tension
Foods:
- Warm, grounding meals: root vegetables, oats, brown rice
- Magnesium-rich foods: leafy greens, nuts, seeds, dark chocolate
- Complex carbohydrates: sweet potato, pumpkin
- Reduce caffeine and sugar if possible
Essential Oil: Cypress — supports emotional flow and grounding
Reflective Questions:
- What needs completion or reflection before my next cycle begins?
- How can I create space for emotional processing and grounding in my body?
Affirmation: “I listen to my emotions with compassion. They guide me back to balance.”
The Moon & Your Cycle
For centuries, women have noticed a natural connection between the menstrual cycle and the phases of the moon.
Some women find their cycle aligns with what is known as the Red Moon Cycle, where menstruation occurs around the Full Moon and ovulation happens near the New Moon.
Traditionally, this rhythm was associated with women who held roles as healers, guides, and wisdom keepers within their communities. Rather than directing their energy toward creating new life, their energy was believed to support intuition, emotional healing, and transformation.
Just like the moon moves through phases each month, so does your body. Each phase carries its own unique energy and gifts.
If you notice your cycle aligning with the moon in this way, you may recognise these archetypal energies within your own experience.
🌕
Menstrual Phase (Full Moon) — The Healer
A time of deep intuition, release, and reflection.
🌗
Follicular Phase (Waning Moon) — The Visionary
A phase of fresh ideas, inspiration, and new perspectives.
🌑
Ovulation Phase (New Moon) — The Creator
A time for connection, expression, and planting new seeds.
🌒
Luteal Phase (Waxing Moon) — The Priestess
A phase of discernment, emotional awareness, and truth.
Not every woman’s cycle follows this rhythm, and that’s completely natural. The intention isn’t to force alignment, but simply to notice the patterns of your own body and the wisdom it holds.
Why This Matters
When we begin to honour the rhythm of our cycle; physically, emotionally and energetically — we move away from the pressure to perform the same way every day.
We notice when our energy rises and when it needs rest. We become more aware of the emotions that surface and learn to listen to what they are gently guiding us toward.
Just like the moon moves through its phases, our bodies also move through cycles of release, renewal, expression, and reflection. When we slow down enough to notice these rhythms, we reconnect with a wisdom that has always existed within us.
Practices such as meditation, kinesiology, energy work, bodywork, and aromatherapy can support this process; creating space for emotional release, nervous system regulation, and deeper connection to your body.
And from that place, your cycle becomes less something to manage…and more something to listen to, honour, and trust.
