Spring Wellness: What Traditional Chinese Medicine Can Teach Us About Growth
What Are You Growing? A Spring Reset Through the Lens of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Spring has a different kind of energy.
The days become lighter, the natural world begins to stir, and there is a sense of movement after the stillness of winter. New growth appears almost everywhere you look.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), spring is associated with the Wood element — a season connected with growth, movement, vision, direction and new beginnings.
And perhaps there is something we can learn from nature here.
What are you growing?
What are you watering?
And is it something you actually want to flourish?
Spring and the Wood Element
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, each season is associated with an element and a particular quality of energy.
Spring belongs to Wood.
Think about a tree. It needs strong roots, but it also needs the ability to grow, adapt and reach towards the light.
This is the energy of spring: rooted, yet moving.
It can be a beautiful time to think about where you're heading, what you're creating and what you want more of in your life.
Perhaps there is a new idea you've been sitting on. A change you've been considering. A part of yourself that wants more space.
Spring invites us to notice those impulses.
What is the Wood Element in Traditional Chinese Medicine?
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Wood element is associated with growth, movement, vision, direction and the ability to adapt.
It is traditionally connected with the Liver and Gallbladder systems, and with the smooth movement of Qi throughout the body.
Emotionally, Wood is often associated with anger and frustration — particularly when we feel blocked, restricted or unable to move forward.
At its most balanced, Wood energy has a sense of purpose, flexibility and forward movement.
And perhaps that's why spring can be such a powerful time to check in with ourselves:
Where am I going?
What am I ready to grow?
And where might I be feeling stuck?
When Growth Feels Stuck
Growth doesn't always feel expansive.
Sometimes we know we want something to change, but feel completely stuck on where to begin.
In TCM, the free movement of energy is an important theme of the Wood element. When things feel stagnant, we can experience this as frustration, irritability, tension or a sense of being stuck.
Sometimes life simply asks us to move.
Physically.
Emotionally.
Creatively.
Or in the direction of something we've been putting off.
This doesn't mean forcing change. It can be as simple as creating the conditions for movement to happen.
What Are You Watering?
This is the question I've been sitting with this spring.
Because growth isn't only about what we consciously choose.
We're constantly watering things with our attention, time, energy and thoughts.
Our relationships.
Our habits.
Our worries.
Our work.
Our dreams.
Our boundaries.
Our bodies.
So it's worth asking:
What am I giving my energy to?
And perhaps the bigger question:
Is it something I actually want to grow?
Sometimes we need to nourish something new.
Sometimes we need to prune something back.
And sometimes we simply need to stop pouring our energy into something that has been taking more than it gives.
A Spring Check-In
You don't need to reinvent your life because the season has changed.
Instead, take a few quiet moments to notice what is already asking for your attention.
What am I ready to grow?
Where am I craving more movement?
What needs more nourishment?
What has become stagnant?
What am I ready to release or stop watering?
Where do I need more flexibility?
And perhaps:
What would I love this season to make possible?
There doesn't need to be an immediate answer.
Sometimes noticing is the first shift.
Supporting Your Own Spring Energy
You can work with the energy of the season in simple ways.
Get outside and allow yourself to move.
Let your body experience some morning light.
Make space for creativity.
Try something you've been putting off.
Spend time in nature.
Clear something that has been cluttering your physical or mental space.
Make a plan for something you're excited about.
And notice where you're holding tension or frustration rather than allowing yourself to move through it.
Spring isn't asking us to rush.
It's inviting us to move with intention.
Creating the Conditions to Flourish
One of the things I love most about this season is the reminder that growth needs the right conditions.
A seed doesn't need to be shouted at to grow.
It needs nourishment, space, light, water and time.
We aren't so different.
Sometimes what we need isn't another thing to achieve or fix.
It might be more space.
More support.
A different perspective.
A chance to listen to what the body has been communicating.
This is part of what sits at the heart of my work — creating space to explore the deeper patterns, emotions and signals that can sit underneath what we're experiencing.
The body remembers. I help you listen.
So as spring unfolds, perhaps don't ask yourself only:
What do I need to do?
Ask:
What am I creating the conditions for?
Because whatever you're watering has the potential to grow.
Choose consciously. 🌱
