Insomnia

By: Penny Butler, NaturalHealing.com.au

Talking from experience, I can say that insomnia is no road to travel. When insomnia hits it brings forth impulsive actions, panic attacks, nervousness, inability to cope with stress, and so forth.

The person rarely gets proper nutrition, since the body is worn from lack of sleep, that food is no longer appealing.

One of the key obstacles in the way of sleep when a person undergoes insomnia is the mind is often chaotic. When a person lays down to rest the mind starts wondering, worrying about things that haven't happen yet. The person may worry how he/she is going to pay bills, or else worry about death in the family that may not have occurred yet. There are several reasons that insomnia attacks, and sometimes it is strictly the mind hindering the body from rest, while at other times mental illness is underlying the surface. Persons that suffer Posttraumatic Stress Syndrome, Multiple Personality Disorder, Bipolar, Schizophrenia, Psychosis, or other disorders often experience insomnia.

To cope with insomnia a person may need medications, or else if you know how to use mind over matter you can learn strategies and techniques to help you master insomnia. One of the first actions I attempted was training my mind to think "sufficient for today, for no one knows what tomorrow will bring." This helped me to relax and not worry about anything outside of today. I also trained my mind to think "one day at a time" and "I am only changing what I can, and not worrying about what I can't change." I also said, "There is nothing I can do about it right now, so why worry." The training helped me to see that I was overwrought at times, and worrying about things, I had no control over, thus this begin working. Next, when I lay down to sleep I learned to train my mind to "shut-up." Shutting down the thoughts was a great strategy, since not long after I begin the training I started sleeping with ease. Counting pigs, chickens, sheep, and other critters jumping over the fence also helped. Hey don't laugh; I like to add humor to my life since that too helps to minimize insomnia. If you can learn to find the humor in stressful actions, events, et cetera, you can learn to laugh off the things you can't change and sleep on the things you can change.

Other great strategies for relieving insomnia is finding a stress management scheme and time management plan to help you gain control of your life. Stress management plans mean you are willing to exercise, practice nutritional behaviors, taking time out for your self and learning techniques that will help you to cope with stress. Time management schemes will help you to budget your income, which will help you to avoid debts that also lead to insomnia. Time management schemes will also help you to learn self-control, and how to plan a schedule that fits your lifestyle.

Studies have shown that those that fail to exercise often experience stress. Stress is the leading cause of insomnia. Studies have shown also, that particular types of exercise are more effective than other types of exercises for relieving stress. Cardiovascular exercises are one of the best forms of exercises that minimize stress while building the tools to cope. The heart and body is affected immensely when stress occurs and more so when insomnia takes control of the life. During an interview, I observed one man that suffered insomnia and this person often made bad decisions during the course of a day. The man seemed to loose control of his spending, and participated in drug intake to relieve his stress and tension built from lack of sleep. While medications was needed in this particular case, but lack of exercise and proper diet led to the stress and insomnia that this man endured.
