Help for Insomnia Patients with MPDBy: Penny Butler, NaturalHealing.com.au
Doctors often find this disorder baffling, since the switching of personalities leads to various medical and mental conditions. For example, one patient visited the doctor and was diagnosed and treated for Tuberculosis, yet when the patient was seen on the next visit the diagnose was non-existing. The person rarely is able to tell a doctor that he/she is suffering insomnia, simply because when one personality is on the spot and does not know that he/she suffers insomnia, thus the condition is buried.
Regardless of the condition, anyone suffering MPD will undergo chronic to acute insomnia, switching back and forth. The insomnia will affect the body, yet the mind is often rested even when a person has not slept an entire night. It sounds strange, but the fact is the personality on the spot is not tired, although the entire group of personalities has not rested. Still, the mind is affected and it will show throughout the course of this person's lifetime. I felt it important to discuss this topic, since these people too suffer insomnia and need help, yet very little help is available to them.
We will discuss insomnia throughout this article with brief notations of MPD, since this may trigger a reader. Often these people suffer Posttraumatic Stress Disorder coupled with MPD. Doctors are unable to treat these individuals often, since medications can have an adverse attack on the person. In order to prescribe medications the personality suffering must be treated, diagnosed and medicated without interrupting the other personalities, which is next to impossible. For example, one personality may have Bipolar while none of the other persons may not, thus if you are treating a person for Bipolar and it is non-existing, trouble is in the making.
Therefore, we are considering insomnia, thus to treat patients with this particular diagnose we must find the person that is suffering the symptoms. I encourage anyone with this diagnose to exercise and try hard to diet. I also encourage ongoing education, since I found that these people respond well to knowledge and learning. It is also important to learn more about your diagnose and if you have to move from your area to visit a counsellor trained in treating this diagnose, then do so by all means. Out of ten patients that suffer, MPD there is one-half of a counsellor somewhere in 40 states that knows how to treat these individuals. As you can see, the odds are against these lost souls.
Persons that have endured extensive abuse should find a peaceful area to rest and a safe environment. If you are feeling tension during the night, it may be because the area you are resting is not providing you a safe feeling. If possible, ask another person to come out on the spot, someone that is able to relax. Encourage the mind by telling your self that you are now safe, that no one can hurt you. Many times when a person with this diagnoses is suffering insomnia it is often because the persons is experience deep seated fears. Thus, the ultimate method for treating insomnia for these patients is finding a safe haven and learning your fears to master them from controlling your mind.
