Coping with Insomnia

By: Penny Butler, NaturalHealing.com.au

Insomnia is caused by various reasons, including stress, nervous conditions, medical conditions and mental conditions. Insomnia may occur if you recently lost a loved one, or else if you recently moved or started a new job.

The ladder sources of insomnia are often short lived; however, when a person goes through weeks, months or even years without resting peacefully at night then something underneath the surface is causing the stress.

Alcoholics and drug addicts often experience long-term insomnia, since the mind and body is often filled with negative charges, making sleep impossible. Usually when a drug or alcohol problem is involved sleep, patterns are often out of adjustment. If you have a problem with drugs and/or alcohol then alcoholic and/or drug addiction counsellors are needed to help, you cope with the addictions, thus getting to help for insomnia. it is best to stop overusing alcohol and stop drugs all together, but since it is an addiction help is needed to stop and it could take years. Once you follow the steps to stopping alcohol and/or drugs sleep will come naturally.

Mental illness or disorders often include symptoms such as acute or chronic insomnia. When a person is suffering certain disorders or ailments insomnia seems to be the ailments best friend. It depends on the mental ailment or disorder, but many can be treated with medications. For example, bipolar is not necessary a mental disorder, rather it is caused from a chemical imbalance and unstable emotions. Once the persons is placed on the correct medications it should get the brain on balance thus sleep will often follow.

On the other hand, if a person is suffering Paranoid Schizophrenia then long-term treatment is needed, coupled with long-term medications. Once the person is placed on medications acute insomnia attacks may occur throughout the process, however, chronic insomnia will become rare. Of course, if the person is taking medications and continuing an unhealthy lifestyle, chronic insomnia may continue. Paranoid Schizophrenia is one of the harder diagnoses to treat, since it is a lapse in the Twin brain area, instead of a mental illness or disorder.

Other types of disorders are also easier to treat than others are. If a person is suffering from depression this too is often an imbalance in the brain area. Depression is often treated with medication, however the person often thinks negatively, thus positive therapy is necessary to retrain the mind. Depression often causes insomnia to occur because the mind is preoccupied with negative thoughts throughout the day and night hours.

Providing help for depression is easier said than done, since personality types play a role in the disruption. If you are suffering depression causing insomnia then when you lie down to rest you should tell your self that you deserve a good night of rest.

Medical conditions can also cause insomnia. If you are suffering chronic pain in the joints and muscles, then it is often difficult to sleep at night. If you are taking medications for the pain, but still find it difficult to sleep at night, you may want to take a hot shower or bath before bedtime. The heat will minimize the pain. You may also want to learn to sleep with your feet elevated while keeping the spinal straight during rest hours. Chiropractor help has done wonders for millions that suffer chronic pain and insomnia.

Other illnesses may cause insomnia, but for the most part any version of illness is helped by taking the right medications. A person should also learn exercises and proper dieting patterns coupled with coping techniques to survive and cope with insomnia.
